The 9th Annual Red, Hot & Wild Kokomo Chili Cook-off is coming to the Kokomo Event Center on Feb. 28. Taste samples of chili and vote for your favorite from 1-4 p.m. (or while supplies last.)

Many of the chili vendors decorate their booths in a creative theme and compete for showmanship. There will also be a beer garden, musical entertainment, and other food available to purchase. Plan to come for a good time and some really good chili. Tickets are $6 at the door (or $5 in advance.) Children 9 & under are free. Visit Kokomo on Saturday for a red, hot & wild good time!

No visit to Kokomo is complete without a tour of the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Factory. In business since 1888, this is Kokomo’s only gas boom era factory still in existence today. In fact, they are also the oldest manufacturer of opalescent and cathedral stained glass in the world. People have been coming to take the “behind the scenes” tour for decades and for good reason. I have toured the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Factory several times and still enjoy watching and learning about the unique and very interesting techniques used in making glass. Come take the fascinating tour where you will watch hot molten glass ladled out of a 12 pot furnace and then rolled into colorful sheets of art glass.

You can also view the giant room where all the sheets of glass are stored and perfectly color coded. The glass is then sent all over the world for use by stained glass artists. The Op Shop, which is the factory’s retail shop, showcases some of the work created with the beautiful art glass, such as paperweights, lamps, suncatchers and other specialty gift items that can be purchased.
Their hot glass studio is also located in the factory where skillful glass blowers create very unique and custom pieces of work. A demonstration is shown on the tour.

Group tours are scheduled by appointment only. However, public tours are given for individuals and families every Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10:00 a.m. (no tours are given in December.) Take special note that no open-toed shoes or sandals are permitted.
Have you taken the tour? Let me know! Leave a comment on our blog about what you thought. Special thanks to the staff for letting us post their fabulous photos! Contact them for more information or to find out more about their glass production tours.

Many people do not know that Norman Bridwell, the well-known children’s author who created Clifford, the Big Red Dog, is actually from Kokomo. Clifford, the Big Red Dog, is one of those timeless characters that children (young and old) recognize and continue to enjoy in books and on TV. The Kokomo/Howard County Public Library is celebrating Kokomo native Norman Bridwell on Feb. 15 from 2:30-5:00 p.m. with a special BIG RED event.
Twenty guest readers from the Kokomo area will be reading Clifford books out loud throughout the library and birthday cake will be served in honor of Mr. Bridwell’s birthday. In addition, there will be a special permanent exhibit on display in the library entitled “Never Give Up On Your Dreams.” This will be a great event for kids of all ages and admission is free!
