Visit downtown Kokomo this summer and you will definitely notice something special.  With the help of more than 90 volunteers donating their time this week, downtown Kokomo will be more vibrant than ever.  In just one day, volunteers planted 6,825 petunias in 325 large flower baskets that will hang in downtown Kokomo and along part of Sycamore Street this summer.  The baskets were planted inside a Country Raisin’s greenhouse in Howard County where they will remain until May 16 when they will be hung on downtown light posts.

The basket planting is the continuation of a beautification project by the City of Kokomo and the Kokomo Downtown Association, which was started in 2006.  The stunning flower baskets are enjoyed by both residents and visitors and create a true sense of pride in our community.

The work is not over yet!  This spring’s beautification project continues May 9 when volunteers will once again come out to plant flowers around the City Building and Gazebo and in the downtown public parking lot on Union Street.  Thank you to all the volunteers that help make Kokomo a truly great place to live, work, and visit!

HGTV Design Star Coming to Kokomo!

I am very excited to announce that Kim Myles, HGTV Design Star and host of “Myles of Style,” will be in Kokomo on Saturday, May 16.  She will present two seminars at IU Kokomo Kresge Auditorium at 11am and 3pm.  The first session will be “Exploring Your Style” and will feature ways to seek, identify, and implement your own unique style of decor.  “Reinventing the Familiar” will be the topic of her second session and will explore ways to refresh, re-imagine, and reuse your current interior. 


 Looking for design ideas to give your home a fresh new look?  Plan to attend and be inspired!  Tickets to see Kim Myles are $30 per session or $50 all day.  In addition, there will be “Living in Style”  exhibitors from 10am-5pm.  Vendors will be on hand to show you the latest techniques and styles to make your home beautiful! 

While you are in Kokomo, don’t miss the 2009 Designers’ Showhome featuring the Schelbert Home at 511 West Taylor Street.  Local designers have been busy re-decorating the rooms in this beautiful home and are ready to showcase their design work.  The home will be open daily May 3-17 from 11am-7pm.  Tickets are $10 advance or $12 at the door.

Kokomo Wings & Wheels Show

Mark your calendars!  There will be an Air Show at the Kokomo Airport on Saturday, July 4, 2009.  The day will be packed with fun activities for the whole family!  A pancake breakfast will be served from 7am-Noon.  Main events will start around Noon and will include:

  • Airplane rides
  • Warbirds and vintage & aerobatic aircraft flying demonstrations & displays
  • Parachute jumpers
  • Car & Bike Show – antiques & hot rods
  •  Much more!
