Visit downtown Kokomo this summer and you will definitely notice something special.  With the help of more than 90 volunteers donating their time this week, downtown Kokomo will be more vibrant than ever.  In just one day, volunteers planted 6,825 petunias in 325 large flower baskets that will hang in downtown Kokomo and along part of Sycamore Street this summer.  The baskets were planted inside a Country Raisin’s greenhouse in Howard County where they will remain until May 16 when they will be hung on downtown light posts.

The basket planting is the continuation of a beautification project by the City of Kokomo and the Kokomo Downtown Association, which was started in 2006.  The stunning flower baskets are enjoyed by both residents and visitors and create a true sense of pride in our community.

The work is not over yet!  This spring’s beautification project continues May 9 when volunteers will once again come out to plant flowers around the City Building and Gazebo and in the downtown public parking lot on Union Street.  Thank you to all the volunteers that help make Kokomo a truly great place to live, work, and visit!

Let us know what you think!  Leave a comment and tell us what you think of Kokomo’s beautification projects and watch for the 2009 flower basket photos on our blog this summer.
